Operation Patriots FOB: A Beacon of Hope for Veterans and First Responders

In the heart of Ridgeland, South Carolina, a sanctuary known as Operation Patriots Forward Operating Base (OPFOB) stands as a testament to the dedication and vision of its founder, Roy Brown, Jr. This non-profit organization, born from Brown’s passion and commitment to raise awareness of veteran suicide, serves as a refuge for veterans, active combat, first responders, and their families. The property provides them with 268 acres of outdoor space where they can partake in activities such as hunting, fishing, shooting, or simply being in the company of like-minded individuals.

Brown, a former Marine, served three years in Iraq following the 9/11 attacks. After sustaining an injury in Baghdad, he returned to his home state of New York, and tried with little avail to acclimate into civilian life.

It was during this tumultuous time that he learned the devastating news that one of his childhood friends and fellow marine had committed suicide. Unfortunately, this was the first of many experiences Brown would have with veteran suicide. “On average our nation loses around 22-44 veterans a day to suicide,” says Brown. Motivated by a desire to bring awareness to the alarming rate of veteran suicide, Brown embarked on a mission to create a place where like-minded individuals could come together, relax, reconnect, and enjoy the great outdoors.

A partner in progress

The journey to establishing Operation Patriots FOB was not without its financial hurdles. On July 23, 2020, Brown took a significant step towards this vision by securing a loan from AgSouth Farm Credit. The support from Walterboro loan officer, Ricky Varnadoe proved to be instrumental. “Having a personal connection with my loan officer, means a lot to me,” says Brown. Understanding the value and potential impact of Brown's vision, AgSouth provided the necessary financing to acquire the property in Ridgeland. This partnership was more than a financial transaction; it was a collaboration rooted in a shared commitment to community and service.

Brown's determination, combined with AgSouth's support, transformed an ambitious dream into a thriving reality. By creating an environment where individuals can connect with others who understand their experiences, OPFOB helps to break the isolation that many feel. The FOB serves as a crucial reminder that no one has to face their struggles alone. This initiative not only saves lives but also raises awareness about the mental health challenges faced by those who have dedicated their lives to serving others.

Future plans

Looking ahead, OPFOB has ambitious plans to expand and enhance its facilities and services. This includes building additional facilities for therapy and recreation, expanding outreach efforts to connect with more veterans and first responders, and fostering partnerships with other organizations dedicated to similar causes.

Moreover, there are plans to establish a permanent memorial on the property to honor those who have lost their lives to suicide. This memorial will serve as a place of reflection and remembrance, reinforcing the organization's commitment to raising awareness and providing support.
